APPLICATIONS & RESEARCH

Belt conveyor and its support structure at a surface mine

Research note

Distributed fiber monitoring of conveyor idler condition

Long conveyors contain many idlers, so an anomaly needs a location and an operating context. Distributed vibration records can provide continuous screening information for inspections.

Research note

Multi-parameter optical observations in underground distribution networks

Underground distribution maintenance needs to relate cable temperatures, transformer operation and manhole conditions. Different quantities require their own measurements before time-aligned interpretation.

Ring-gear strain and loading in wind-turbine gearboxes

Local strain in a large gearbox contains information about gear engagement and load distribution. Fiber around a stationary ring gear provides circumferential observations across operating states.

FBG observations of wind-tower bending vibration

Wind loading, rotation and structural modes all contribute to tower response. Directional strain measurements synchronized with speed help separate periodic sources.
